History of Medicine Tree Ranch

In order to honor tradition and demonstrate respect for the ranch, it was determined that the name Medicine Tree Ranch would be most fitting, inspired by the tale of…

Medicine Tree Hill.

The legend recounts that many years ago, a young Indian, while leisurely ascending a hill, realized that his enemies were following him. Requiring rest, the individual sought a secluded spot where he suspended his medicinal talisman from the limb of a tree. Upon being awaken by the shouts of his enemies, who had uncovered his location, he was immediately targeted with arrows. To the surprise of the Indian, not a single arrow made contact with his body; instead, they all veered off and flew into space before reaching him. This event caused a significant surprise for him, as he found himself completely surrounded. Encouraged by the belief that he was safeguarded by his “medicine,” he promptly retaliated to the enemies’ arrows with those from his own bow. He was pleased to observe that every arrow hit its target, leading to the demise of many of his enemies. Another Indian, observing the significant loss of life among his companions, and believing in the potent protective qualities of the young Indian’s “Medicine,” became desperate. Upon noticing the medicine talisman hanging from the tree above the young Indian’s head, he made a dash for the tree and, seizing the “Medicine” from the branch, discarded it. The very next arrow aimed at the single-handed warrior reached a vital spot and he descended to the earth, never to rise again.

This legend is still widely believed among the indigenous people of the western slope. They never pass the tree without hanging some article from their personal effects upon one of the limbs as a token of reverence for their superstitious beliefs and to perpetuate the memory of the medicine-related tragedy enacted beneath its shade. To this day, the hill is known as “Medicine Tree Hill”.
